COMMUNITY GIFTS
The COMMUNITY GIFT was established in order to guarantee a more truthful, progressive and beneficial process of putting your generous donations to use. The following examples are just a few of the reasons why we advise you to purchase a community gift:
A) On many occasions missionaries have come to the field and left personal items or money behind for the local people. Whilst we, like them are appreciative of all and any of the support provided, we try to maintain a level of fairness, professionalism and respect by asking you to put your money towards a community gift we know will not only bless the local people but show your true honesty and love for them. They have become accustomed to people treating them as charity cases, which HINDERS their ability to fend for themselves. We PREFER that you PLEASE work with us to HELP restore the people and not further handicap them through EMOTIONAL giving!
B) It's important to keep the community spirit and mentality by sharing and equally dividing everything that comes into the community. Basically, whatever we are able to do for some, we will always try and do for all!
C)Some local people may tell you they are homeless or have no food during your visit. Even if it is so, in order to protect you and ourselves and to ensure that those genuinely in need are catered for, and we ask that you FIRST discuss with us and allow us to DIRECT and GUIDE you in your giving effort. This way we can come closer to helping you and us make sure that help is reaching those in TRUE desperate need on the ground.
For a list of the items and products you can purchase and when to do so, see below:
If you decide to go ahead the first thing you should do is make a decision as an individual or as a group on which community gift(s) you would like to bring for the local people.
(1) - FREE Medical Supply Kit
Through our contacts at MAP International, we can help you acquire a FULL medical bag [20kg],filled with enough FREE medical supplies that can be used to treat between 600-700 patients. The kit will need to be ordered from MAP well in ADVANCE and will be delivered straight to you BEFORE you leave for the mission field. This is just the size of one check-in piece of your luggage! There is a packing & shipping cost of just $450 charged by MAP to send it out to you!
(2) - Micro-Finance Plan
Your kind Gift of $50 or more will help provide a local WOMAN/FAMILY with a MICRO-CAPITAL PLAN that will enable them to start a SMALL TRADE and sustain their family.
Example: When you provide your gift we can use it to purchase chickens for a local person. The chickens can provide eggs and nutrition that can be SOLD. In this case, the chickens can continue to lay and multiply. A similar principal can apply to purchasing yams, tomatoes or grain. The individual feels immediately empowered! We ensure that the MICRO-POWER terms & conditions are adhered to, so that undue loss is not incurred.
The more sales, the more profit, the easier it becomes to sustain their family. It really can be as simple as that!
Go to: JHM Micro Power for more details.
(3) - Reading Glasses
You may purchase as many reading glasses as you have budget for (Various lenses and frames are preferred as they can be adjusted and fitted by opticians on arrival). They can travel easily in a piece of sturdy hand luggage.
(4) - Supply of Vitamin Tablets
You may purchase as many small bottles of everyday vitamin tablets as you have budget for (The tablets will be divided equally with your help during the medical camp). Again these can come with you in your luggage.

For more information on what you can and cannot carry on a flight, security in the airport and traveling with food and gifts Go to: Transportation Security Administration - Travelers
Please note that whilst IT IS NOT COMPULSORY for you to purchase a Community Gift in order to come on a Mission Trip, we do recommend it due to the nature of the gifts. It is a heartfelt way of showing your appreciation to the people for their hospitality and genuine concern for their well being!
We look forward to seeing you in the mission field!
